Local Radio = Independent
Downtown Radio 99.1 FM is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization operating a Low-Power FM (LPFM) station in the heart of Tucson.
We play college, indie, and underground rock, and we play songs by known artists, but not the songs everyone knows. We avoid playing songs that already receive significant airplay on commercial stations. We might play Pink Floyd or Radiohead, but not one of their big hits. It could even be a song that received a small amount of airplay years ago. We just don't want people to tune in and hear tired old classic rock songs or Top 40 hits that make them want to change the dial. We definitely don't want to play current hits or songs by overtly "commercial" artists.
LPFM stations are designed to be localized, which means they serve a specific community. LPFM-Downtown Tucson strives to inform our community about issues that pertain to it. We run public service announcements to support charitable organizations within our broadcast range and provide a voice for those whose say has been traditionally under-represented.
We focus on helping to connect those in need of mental health services with organizations that can help them. A lot of people are suffering needlessly, and we believe we can make a difference by providing those individuals with resources that can help or by having people on the radio to share their stories to which others can relate.
We have programming like The Depression Session, where individuals come on to tell the story of their experience with depression, and the Mental Health Minute, where a psychiatric nurse interviews representatives from various mental health agencies about the services they provide.
There is more that we would like to do, but we need your support. Please consider making a tax-deductible donation today to Downtown Radio.
