“Paleo” Dave Paiz’s love affair with radio began in South Texas way back in the mid-’70’s when as a boy he used to call in and pester the DJ’s at a local Top 40 station in Corpus Christi. After moving to Southern Arizona in 1977 and several long, strange decades since doing everything from soldiering to science writing to field archaeology, in the summer of 2005 Dave finally made his on-air debut on KXCI Community Radio and launched Bat Country Radio in June of the following year. After 12 years burning the overnight Bat Country oil with a caustic mix of punk, post-punk, metal and noise rock, Dave joined Downtown Radio in 2018 and hosted several different specialty shows before taking on the challenge of a daily morning mix as the host of the Scrambled Sunrise, where these days he spins a less abrasive blend of mostly 21st century indie rock, ’80’s/90’s commercial alternative and late ’70’s/early ’80’s New Wave and College Rock, with lots of exceptions. Abby Normal’s Counter Culture Bliss is a show that keeps you on your toes like a feral cat on a hot Tuff Shed roof under the Arizona sun. Playing everything from Screaming Jay Hawkins, to G.W.A.R. to Ace of Base. All this variety while still holding down for The Old Pueblo. And with Downtown Radio Tucson taking pride in local relationships we all showcase local music. In fact AbNorm features a local tune in each set! Heck, she welcomes, invites, encourages, all local artists, musicians, and community players to interview live in the studio. To discuss, promote, emote, or just plain have rootin tootin fun. Abby Normal's Counter Culture Bliss on Downtown Radio, where by tuning in we all become that dusty ole hungry juke box....feeding each other loose change to twang our fangdoolies. What's a fangdoolie? That’s just one of the questions that she may ask while live in studio. Why? Because she sincerely cares about YOURS and EVERYONE'S fangdoolie. All that lovin while simultaneously blasting out a dysfunctional cacophony of multiple genres making ALL want to twang their fangdoolie's in unison (please not while driving). Hey, if that doesn't tickle your fancy, here's some testimonials from long time listeners… Hannah says, “Listening to Abby Normal is like eating trail mix on a long hike, pretty nutty with lots of energy and some extra tasty bits." Sarah says, “It’s a rodeo clown car covered with strippers." Ambrosia said, “It’s like my Grandma is giving me advice but also offering me a beer to get crunk." And Amanda said, ”It’s like running towards a stampede without getting crushed alive." Eddie compares it to, "Saw Blades grinding on metal but in a Russian techno type of way." And an unknown soul wrote in to say, "It’s a circus but the clowns are dead monkeys."
