Drew Dean began his cycling career long ago and far away in the chilly Northeast, tackling local hills on his Vista 10-speed, set to the soundtrack of Pink Floyd, Genesis and the YesSongs 3LP set. College years intervened and cut into ride time, but a regular cycling commute kept the legs in motion and the soundtrack changed radically to sharp new music from XTC and Buzzcocks.

Further education moved him along to the Big City. Despite the imposing obstacles of Big City traffic, he began cycling forays into the belly of the beast. The soundtrack was culled from the streets–Grace Jones, Grandmaster Flash and Dinosaur L. A series of night jobs followed schooling, allowing for longer ventures across bridges into distant manicured suburbs. The return to the green hillsides of his youth softened the soundtrack to the music of the Smiths and the Go-Betweens.

The out-of-town explorations became longer, the destinations further, the goals higher. Maps were drawn, miles calculated, gear assembled and the soundtrack clicked in a more mechanical mode–the grooves of Orbital and Future Sounds of London in the deck. A 500-mile nonstop bicycle race through the Western desert would be the final pursuit–-a dazzling route across stark landscapes, mostly under the light of a full moon, set to the arid sounds of Mazzy Star and Kendra Smith.

The desert rally was the end of the mega rides, but the visit inspired a permanent move to the Desert Southwest. The local roads beckon, the rides are now shorter, but the terrain is always thrilling and challenging. And the soundtrack is as infinite as the desert night skies.
